meet Chanbo - a group leader 48 years old
"My life has changed since I joined the Self-Help Groups (SHG). I used to be ignored by the community and knew nothing about the rights of disabled people. Now I receive invitations to take part in activities dealing with disability and development, and my neighbors see me as a good example for others."
Ms. Chum Chanbo, aged 48, had polio in both legs and is now a Chief of SHG from CDMD. She lives in Samaki village, Prek Dombong commune, Muk Kompoul district, Kandal province with nine family members including her sister, brother, nephew and niece where she plants bananas, jackfruits, grapefruits, and chilies to sell.
Ms. Chanbo became a disabled person when she was seven years old and did not receive any medical care because Cambodia was in civil war at that time. She felt shy and depressed and didn’t want to go outside, since she was ignored by the community.
“When they saw my capacity, bravery, and goodwill in advocacy, the SHG elected me as a Chief in 2008. It was really different before and after I joined the SHG as I am now able do the same things as everyone else in the community and I am able to help other people with disabilities so they can receive information or services related to disability and development. The neighbors admire my potential.” said Ms. Chanbo.
“The CDMD community supervisor always follows up and helps me with management skills. All members of the SHG are trained in communication, leadership, decision-making, saving money, financial recording and reporting and the group receives funds from CDMD Seed-Grant to use as revolving funds."
I am very happy and satisfied with my job, not just because it provides me with an income, but also because it provides me with honor. It also helps me with networking and better ways of accessing the society. I consider this my new life.
